Man found dead in UC Berkeley restroom

A man was pronounced dead Thursday in a UC Berkeley research building after a campus staffer found him unresponsive in a restroom, authorities report.

The staff member called police to ask for a welfare check after discovering the man shortly after 10 a.m. inside Sutardja Dai Hall, at Hearst and Le Roy avenues, on the north side of campus.

Arriving UCPD officers attempted to revive the man but were unsuccessful.

The Berkeley Fire Department subsequently pronounced the man dead at the scene.

He appeared to be an unsheltered individual in his 30s or 40s who had been deceased in the restroom for some time, authorities said.

UC Berkeley is currently on winter break. The spring semester begins next week, with classes not set to start until Jan. 20.

Detectives from the University of California Police Department conducted a preliminary investigation and found “no obvious signs of foul play,” authorities said.

The Alameda County coroner’s office will now work to identify the man and determine his cause of death.

As of publication time, those determinations had not been made, the coroner’s office said.
