North Berkeley BART closed by possible train strike

A person was taken to the hospital Monday morning after possibly being struck by a BART train in Berkeley, authorities report.

As of about 10:40 a.m., the North Berkeley BART station was closed due to the ongoing investigation.

BART said there was a “major delay” as of about 10:30 a.m. on the Richmond line in all directions.

“ North Berkeley station is currently closed due to a medical emergency,” BART said in a prepared statement. “Preliminary information is a person entered the trackway and a collision may have occurred with a train a person has been removed from the trackway and is being transported to a hospital.”

The incident appears to have started around 10:10 a.m.

There is currently no red line service, BART said.

Millbrae riders from Richmond can take the orange Berryessa train and transfer at MacArthur to a yellow SFO train.

Update, 11:05 a.m. The North Berkeley BART station has reopened and red line service has resumed following “an earlier problem,” BART reported.

“There is a major delay on the Richmond Line in all directions due to an earlier major medical emergency at North Berkeley station,” the agency said at about 10:55 a.m.

Update, 11:15 a.m. According to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner, the Berkeley Fire Department was dispatched to the North Berkeley BART station to investigate a report of a person under a train just before 10:05 a.m.

Responding firefighters found one person underneath the first train car, breathing but unresponsive, according to radio traffic.

Berkeley firefighters performed an extrication and had removed the patient by about 10:20 a.m.

BFD rushed the individual to Highland Hospital, Code 3, several minutes later.
