Berkeley police are on the scene investigating a spate of gunfire near a local elementary school Monday.
As of publication time, there had been no reported injuries, but police were checking for victims at local hospitals.
Details about the gunfire were slim, but witnesses reported a “vehicle swerving all over the road” near King Street and Ashby Avenue as someone held a gun out the window, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

BPD began investigating the shooting shortly before 5 p.m. and quickly found evidence of gunfire in the roadway.

Update, 6:05 p.m. BPD released the following statement. It appears below in full.
On September 8, 2025, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Berkeley Police Officers responded to the area of King Street and Ashby Avenue following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located several shell casings on King Street, just south of Ashby Avenue. Officers interviewed multiple witnesses and determined that the shooting was NOT directed at the nearby elementary school.
As of this time, no victims have been located.
