Police investigate robbery via knife at Berkeley business

An individual with a knife tried to jump over the counter at a Berkeley business during a robbery Monday night, police report.

The robbery happened shortly before 9:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of University Avenue near Bonar Street.

According to Berkeley police, the individual was armed with a “small knife” when he tried to “jump the counter.”

When he failed, he “took several items from the shelves” and fled on Bonar heading south, authorities said.

The store clerk “suffered minor injuries” but “did not require medical attention,” police said. There was also some property damage in the store.

As of publication time, police had not said which business was impacted or provided a suspect description.

As of Jan. 25, the most recent date available, there had been at least 12 other robberies reported in Berkeley this year, compared to eight in the same period last year, according to BPD data.

Update, 3:30 p.m. Police said the incident happened at a local gas station.

The robber, who wore dark clothing, was described as a Black man, about 6 feet to 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with a slim to medium build, police said.
