Berkeley and Alameda County election results, Nov. 2024

As of Friday evening, Sophie Hahn still had the lead for Berkeley mayor after a ranked-choice contest, while Terry Taplin, Ben Bartlett, Shoshana O’Keefe and Brent Blackaby led in their respective Berkeley City Council races.

John Bauters was on top for Alameda County Board of Supervisors, District 5, and the recall campaigns against DA Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao had strong leads.

Results as of 5:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, appear below. About 334,000 ballots have been tallied so far from Alameda County, with about 23,000 from Berkeley.

The next results in the Nov. 5, 2024, election are not expected until Monday.

DA Pamela Price recall effort shows strong early lead
The county said nearly 400,000 ballots had come in by mail from about 960,000 voters, and 70,000 were cast in person. More are coming.

As of this week, Alameda County had about 962,000 registered voters and Berkeley had about 75,000.

Officials are estimating about 700,000 ballots cast in Alameda County and around 55,000 in Berkeley.

Remember: Ranked-choice voting means any race where a candidate doesn’t secure a majority vote will result in an instant run-off where candidates are eliminated from the bottom and their votes are redistributed until someone has a majority. Those calculations take a bit longer to come in.

Berkeley mayor

Five candidates are competing to become Berkeley’s next mayor. After the ranked-choice calculation, Sophie Hahn is solidly in first place.

About 23,000 Berkeley ballots have been tallied so far. In 2020, about 60,000 ballots were cast for Berkeley mayor, but turnout appears to be lower this year.


District 2 (West Berkeley)

In West Berkeley’s City Council District 2, incumbent Terry Taplin has a definitive lead over Jenny Guarino.


District 3 (South Berkeley)

In South Berkeley’s City Council District 3, incumbent Ben Bartlett has the lead over challengers Deborah Matthews and John “Chip” Moore.


District 5 (North Berkeley)

In North Berkeley’s City Council District 5, Shoshana O’Keefe leads by a wide in the race for the open seat vacated by Sophie Hahn.


District 6 (Berkeley Hills)

In City Council District 6, Brent Blackaby is well ahead of Andy Katz in the race for the open Berkeley Hills seat vacated by Susan Wengraf.


Berkeley School Board (2 seats)

Five people are running for two seats. Newcomer Jen Corn is ahead of the pack while incumbents Ana Vasudeo and Laura Babitt are currently battling it out for second.


Alameda County Board of Supervisors, District 5

Two people are running for the Alameda County Board of Supervisors seat vacated by Keith Carson: John Bauters and Nikki Fortunato Bas.
