DUI crash sends pedestrian to hospital, driver arrested

Berkeley police arrested a driver Sunday night after he ran into a fire hydrant and struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, authorities report.

The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. at San Pablo Avenue and Gilman Street, Berkeley police said.

Limited information was available due to the ongoing investigation but the pedestrian was taken to Highland Hospital “code 3,” with lights and sirens, after the crash.

Police said the pedestrian was conscious and talking and appeared to be in stable condition.

He was initially described as bleeding from the head and unconscious after the driver hit him but he woke up at the scene.

The driver’s name was not immediately available pending booking.

The crash created a geyser from a sheared fire hydrant on the west side of San Pablo by the Chevron gas station.
