Camp staffer arrested after child sexual assault at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley police arrested a summer camp staffer Saturday on suspicion of sodomizing a child overnight in a Cal dorm, authorities report.

The University of California Police Department identified the suspect as Quaylin Wesley, a 27-year-old Vallejo man.

Wesley graduated from UC Berkeley in 2021 and is now a PE teacher at the Francophone Charter School of Oakland, according to his LinkedIn page.

UCPD was initially notified between 1:15 and 2 a.m. about an attempted sexual assault that had taken place in a UC Berkeley residence hall, authorities reported in a WarnMe notice Saturday morning.

“UCPD provided immediate safety and support services to those involved,” officials wrote. “Detectives are actively investigating and pursuing leads.”

Just before 5 p.m., authorities sent a second WarnMe announcing Wesley’s arrest.

“Through subsequent investigation, UCPD determined that the incident was a completed sexual assault, rather than an attempted one,” authorities said in the second WarnMe.

Sources later told The Scanner that the victim was an 11-year-old child who had been sodomized by a camp staffer.

No information about the camp or residence hall location was immediately available.
